Discover  the Legacy of Black Inventors

We are thrilled to invite you to the home of innovation, inspiration, and untold stories. The Black Inventors Museum is more than a tribute to history; it's a celebration of ingenuity that has shaped the world we live in today. Since 1996, we've proudly showcased the profound contributions of Black inventors and innovators, reminding the world that Black history is American history and global history.

The Black Inventors Museum proudly announces its encore presentation "Juneteenth & Black Inventors: Celebrating Freedom Through Innovation," a groundbreaking exhibition highlighting the technological contributions of Black inventors throughout American history. The exhibition runs June 18-23, 2025, at City Point Center in Downtown Brooklyn.

Following its successful February 2025 premiere, this exhibition returns by popular demand to commemorate Juneteenth, the federal holiday marking the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.

Special Author Appearance: Renowned author Keith Holmes will sign copies of his book "Black Inventors: Crafting Over 200 Years of Success" on:

● Juneteenth (June 19): 12 noon - 6 pm

● Friday-Sunday (June 20-22): 12 noon - 6 pm

"Juneteenth represents not just physical freedom but intellectual liberation—the freedom to create, patent, and be recognized for one's ingenuity," says the Museum Director. "This exhibition showcases how Black inventors transformed that freedom into groundbreaking innovations that have shaped our world."

The exhibition explores the profound connection between emancipation and invention. After June 19, 1865, when freedom was announced in Texas, newly freed African Americans gained the legal right to own their intellectual property. This sparked unprecedented waves of Black innovation despite overwhelming societal barriers.

Exhibition Features:

● Interactive displays featuring over 100 inventions by Black inventors ● Rare historical patents and documents

● Timeline connecting emancipation to invention milestones

● Educational workshops on the patent process

● Special section on Brooklyn's Black inventors

● Augmented reality experiences bringing innovations to life

About the Museum: For 29 years, the Black Inventors Museum has traveled internationally, educating millions about the often-overlooked contributions of Black inventors to science and technology. The museum's mission to recover, celebrate, and promote the hidden legacy of Black innovation aligns perfectly with Juneteenth's emphasis on recognition and celebration of African American achievement.

"Our traveling exhibition has reached communities across five continents," notes the museum's founder. "We've witnessed how learning about Black inventors transforms young people's understanding of American history and inspires the next generation of innovators."

Community Support: This exhibition is sponsored by Brooklyn Spread Love (Brooklynspreadlove.com) and We Mount Things (wemountthings.com), organizations committed to educational and cultural enrichment in Brooklyn communities.

the tribute to Black Inventions

Our Mission

Our mission is to develop racial pride, promote racial understanding, and provide a new motivation for learning.the Black Inventors museum is for everyone—all age groups and ethnicities. The museum graciously compliments all science and American history curricula while promoting positive images in those who seek to learn about the discoveries and challenges of those great men and women.

Our Vision

Whatever the mind can conceive, the mind achieves. Our goal is to continue to find ways to inspire and motivate young people to believe in and achieve their dreams. We recognize and understand that racism has culturally deprived our youth. We also know that once our youth know better, ultimately they will do better. Highlighting Black Inventors achievements in history that are normally taught in school is the key to their success. Utilizing examples of people making extraordinary contributions to the world gives students the inspiration that is needed.

About Us

Over 175 authentic artifacts are represented in the collection and include patent designs, personal letters, rare photographs, and brief biographies of black inventors.  Also featured are motivational placards and video documentaries. The museum was founded over 25 years ago in Western Massachusetts After years of presenting in New England, BIM went national, appearing at various venues throughout North America. Some of the locales include cultural expos, professional conventions, and educational conferences. Colleges, learning institutions, and community organizations are among the most significant places showcased. BiE has traveled internationally to the Middle East and the Caribbean and has plans to travel to Canada and Africa in the future.

Black Inventors

Black inventors have made groundbreaking contributions across history, shaping fields like technology, science, and everyday life. Pioneers like Garrett Morgan, inventor of the traffic light, and Madam C.J. Walker, the first female self-made millionaire, paved the way for modern innovators like Dr. Lonnie Johnson, creator of the Super Soaker, and Joy Buolamwini, a leader in ethical AI research. At the Black Inventors Museum, we honor these legacies with a comprehensive collection of inventor bios, timelines, and resources, including a free download of The Colored Inventor, the first book to document the achievements of Black inventors, compiled by Henry E. Baker.

The museum's exhibits showcase remarkable innovations that transformed American industry, from Jan Ernst Matzeliger's shoe-lasting machine that revolutionized footwear manufacturing to George Washington Carver's groundbreaking research in agricultural science. We highlight lesser-known inventors like Lewis Latimer, whose improvements to the light bulb were instrumental in making electric lighting practical and affordable, and Dr. Patricia Bath, whose Laserphaco Probe revolutionized cataract surgery.

Our interactive displays bring to life the perseverance of inventors like Granville Woods, known as the "Black Edison" for his numerous patents in electrical systems and railway technologies. We feature contemporary innovators like Dr. Mark Dean, who holds three of IBM's original nine PC patents, and Dr. Shirley Jackson, whose research laid the groundwork for fiber optic cables, portable fax machines, and caller ID.

This project was vital in preserving the rich history of Black innovation, and we proudly continue Baker's mission of celebrating and uplifting Black excellence. Download your free copy of The Colored Inventor today and join us in exploring this remarkable legacy!

Our dedication extends beyond preservation to inspiration, as we offer educational programs, workshops, and mentorship opportunities connecting young inventors with industry leaders. Through virtual tours, traveling exhibits, and partnerships with schools nationwide, we ensure these stories of ingenuity and determination reach future generations of innovators.
