Celebrating our 30th anniversary

The Black Inventors Museum, America's  traveling museum dedicated exclusively to Black inventors and innovators, announces its landmark 30th Anniversary Black History Month celebration: "The Future Has a History: From Artifacts to Algorithms." This comprehensive week-long exhibition and cultural series connects historic Black inventions to modern technology and artificial intelligence, serving as the NYC official Black History Month 2026 closing event.

Featuring over 150 authentic artifacts and seven days of immersive programming from February 23 through March 1, 2026, this anniversary celebration welcomes students during daytime hours and the general public through evening events blending cultural performances, expert lectures, and community dialogue.

Three Decades of Educational Impact: A Museum 365 Days a Year

For 30 years, The Black Inventors Museum has traveled 365 days a year throughout the United States, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and internationally. Founded in 1996 in western Massachusetts and now based in New York City, the museum has exhibited at 100+ colleges and universities including Boston University, Duke University, Howard University, and Syracuse University, reaching thousands of students across 100+ cities worldwide.

"Thirty years of this museum is proof that innovation is a living story—one that continues to grow," said Morgan Pleasant, Executive Director. "This anniversary exhibit honors the legacy and invites New York City to explore what's next—because the future has a history."

James Ince, Creator and Curator, added: "From artifacts to algorithms, we're showing how yesterday's breakthroughs inform tomorrow's possibilities. This exhibit makes those connections clear—from the physical inventions people can touch to the ideas powering modern technology."

Understanding the Theme: Bridging Three Centuries of Innovation

"From Artifacts to Algorithms" demonstrates how tangible inventions by Black pioneers—from the automatic traffic light to cellular phone technology—laid the groundwork for today's digital revolution and AI systems. The theme illustrates that innovation is continuous: yesterday's breakthrough inventors tackled problems with the same creative thinking driving today's technology leaders.

Artifacts represent physical inventions, patent designs, and the foundation of modern systems. Algorithms represent computational thinking, AI technologies, and digital innovations shaping our future. From the Super Soaker to supercomputers, from the mailbox to email systems, Black inventors have always been at the forefront of transforming ideas into reality.
